Avaya Healthcare & Working Together

[singlepic id=39 w=320 h=240 float=left]Avaya’s purchase of Nortel has contributed to Avaya’s portfolio in many verticals, and one of those verticals being the health care sector.

Studies reflecting Nurse time/patient ratios as well as exponential cost increases within the hospital and the shortage of specialty nurses has provided  massive requirements for cost savings and work automation.

In this recent article “Avaya Solidifies Hold in Health Care with Acquisition” Anikt Gupta interviews General Manager of Avaya’s Health care solutions to provide some analysis of what Avaya has been accomplishing in the health care space with communication automation and approval solutions.

In particular, one of the examples illustrated is costs savings in the significant reduction in time it takes for out-patient approvals and discharge – saving time throughout the day totaling multiple hours and over 1million (specific numbers in the article) in net benefits for the hospital.

While the article does focus on US medical operations; here in Canada, quite a bit of focus and funding around EMR is beginning to accelerate.  Local medical facilities (Dr. Practices) are receiving funding to begin  digitizing their patient records, and have already begun to see the value and efficiency this brings.  Enabling those facilities and how patient data is shared with local, provincial and federal health care providers is still a contested issue within Canada – however, another story.

[singlepic id=40 w=200 h=150 float=right]As we begin to focus on the value that organizations such as Avaya, and Combat Networks bring to process automation, and communications, the key factor here is that understanding the BUSINESS and the BUSINESS requirements are key for both the organization’s IT staff and the solution provider.  The article above shows that working together (customer and a skilled integrator), can provide solutions far beyond voice, dial tone and data transmission.
