Synopsis:

Competitive Positives

  • Avaya’s previously announced roadmap for Nortel products made it clear that Norstar would be phased outwithin the next year or so. (Please see Avaya’s Roadmap for Nortel Answers Some Questions but Raises Others,January 19, 2010.) It was clear that Avaya would at some point issue an end-of-sale notice for Norstar systems, just as it will for other communications products in the Nortel portfolio. As a result Norstar customers andresellers should not be overly shocked by the announcement.
  • Avaya has lengthened the period of time it will provide complimentary support for Norstar systems.Manufacturer support for software, typically offered for one year, has been extended to three years. This shouldhelp appease Norstar resellers and customers needing to prolong use of their Norstar investments and also aid inplanning out migration paths to other communications systems.
  • Avaya has a Norstar-to-IP Office migration strategy in place. This includes a version of IP Office that supportsNorstar phones, which should be generally available late this year or early next. Migrating Norstar systems toBusiness Communications Manager (BCM) 50 is also an option, though it is unclear how long this Norteldevelopedsystem will be in Avaya’s portfolio.
  • Avaya has recently introduced a scaled down version of IP Office that could very easily replace Norstar at the
low end-of-Avaya’s communications systems catalog. (Please see Avaya Reintroduces IP Office to Small
Businesses with R6, March 10, 2010). Avaya will position IP Office 500 V2 not only as a replacement to the
Nortel BCM 50 and 450, which is expected to go end-of-sale something in 2011, but to Norstar systems as well

Competitive Concerns

  • Avaya had promised no further end-of-sale announcements this year
  • Avaya has chosen not to re-manufacture Norstar parts
  • Specific Norstar-to-IP Office migration detail still not public
  • PARTNER ACS is Norstar equivalent in Avaya portfolio but resellers encouraged to sell IP Office

Combat Networks is currently providing migration and upgrade strategies/discounts to support this recent announcement, please contact you Combat Networks sales rep to discuss in detail.

/thanks,

So if i have a lot of Norstar telephones and a lot of Norstar systems i can still using them as long i wanted used, I KNOW THAT WE WILL BE FINE UNTIL 2016, but i wanted still using my Norstar equipments before during and after 2016, i own my Norstar equipments and i expend a lot of money, so i can using them after 2016, i dont think im ilegal to use my Norstar phones and using my Norstar system after 2016, i know there is a lot of changes comming soon, better technology, better stuffs, but i dont wanted change my phone for anything, so i dont think im ilegal to use my Norstar systems and telephones after 2016.

Ivelyr,

You can definitely continue to use your Norstar system after 2016. You will have to note however that you will be out of support from Avaya, and no longer able to obtain software updates.

Thanks,
AD
