Avaya VPN UNIStim

As discussed in an earlier article (Avaya/Nortel CS1000E and VPN client on 1100 series sets),Combat Networks has been testing Avaya’s VPN connectivity providing VPN – VOIP extended PBX services to remote users via Avaya 1100 and Contivity.

Here are a few updates as to the release as well as some success with a few customers.

UPDATE: here is a post from Avaya on Virtual offices and telecommuting from the Avaya Blog http://www.avayablog.com/archives/2010/06/the_view_from_t_1.php

Avaya 1100 Series UNIStim VPN Client

The 1100 series UNIStim VPN Client (UVC) is a new feature found on the latest firmware release (0624C7F/1120E)

The release allows for the 1100 series sets (other models also supported) to create a tunnel back to a Contivity fronted CS1K (SIgSrv/Media gateway) and register the phone.(Supported Contivity required)

Data connectivity

PC attached to the phone is neither tunneled nor encrypted, allowing remote PC to access local/internet traffic from the POP.   Scenarios requiring secure application/data access will have to provision an addition tunnel (SSL/IPSEC/ect), configured easily.

Customer A: Prior Setup

This functionality was great news for one of our hospitality customers who is required to support some off-site agents.  Previous setup included soft phone and user provided PC/Notebook. Varied hardware configurations and operating systems resulted in a support challenge and risk beyond the benefits offered by the solution.

Customer A: VPN/1100 Setup

Under their new setup, the PC/Notebook is no longer part of the equation, an 1120E  is simply provisioned and issued  to the client.  Client simply plugs the unit in a internet enabled Ethernet port and voila…dial tone.

Removing PC support from the telephony staff was crucial to their success.  As for the technology, this customer was no stranger to the Contivity’s reliability and performance.  As for the users, they were able to benefit from an exceptionally clear and  reliable call experience and their tickets with the support center, PC reboots and reset VPN password issues have all but disapeared.
